At age 45, Ryan is a native of Parsippany, New Jersey, and is headed into his 26th season as a coach, 20th season coaching in the Dallas area and his 14th year with the Dallas Penguins. Ryan has also coached for 12 seasons at the Dallas Stars Elite. Ryan began his passion for coaching as a Head Instructor at Peak Performance Hockey Camps in Winona, Minnesota at the age of 18 while attending college for broadcast journalism and sport management and playing hockey back home at The College of Morris and Montclair St. University. Ryan also began giving private lessons in 1998. Before leaving North Jersey at the age of 21, Ryan had the honor of coaching the High School team he played for and lead the team to a league championship, eventually bowing out in the 128 team tournament to the eventual State Public School Champions. While spending time at various professional camps in the fall of 2002, Ryan eventually ended up in Dallas, where he began his coaching career. After two seasons with the Dallas Ice Hawks, Ryan headed the Duncanville Dragons program for 8 years. He was also the hockey programs manager for the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Duncanville from 2006-2009. After coaching his core players in Duncanville from PeeWees through their Midget Major season, Ryan headed to the north side of town. In his 14 years as a coach with the Penguins, he has led to 4 State Championships and 6 League Championship wins, as well as numerous tournament championships. Ryan loves the responsibility of developing both the individual skill of the game as well as the team aspect the sport offers.
